Creating a blog post with valuable content will go a long way to help prove to your customers and potential customers that you’re a trusted leader in your field. Blogging on a weekly basis (at minimum) can also really help boost your SEO, as Google sees each blog post as a new page being added. If you figure that you’ll post once a week for a year, you’re essentially adding 52 new posts/pages that can result in more traffic to your website.

This is because ideally, each blog post should target a potential subject or topic that one of your potential customers may be searching about. The idea is, eventually you will get someone who lands on your blog post, and now that they are on your website, the chances of converting them to a customer heavily increases.

So how do you ensure that every blog post is being indexed properly by Google to increase your chances that it will show up higher?

Great question! This is why we’ve put together a list of recommendations on optimizing your blog for search. Keep in mind, the focus should ALWAYS be on valuable content and how it will be useful to your viewer. In other words, don’t blog FOR SEO, but instead, aim to makew your post “SEO Friendly.”

1. Decide on your topic, and which keyword or keyword phrase the topic is centered around.

Every section of your blog should focus on the same focus keyword or keyword phrase, but in a way that’s not obnoxiously obvious. Gone are the days where you can get away with “keyword dumping,” or spamming your own posts with tons of keywords. To reiterate, quality content is key, with a healthy touch of SEO.


2. Include the main keyword phrase in your title, content and link usage 

example… 2017 Home Decorating Trends in Boise, Idaho (If “Boise Decorating Trends: was my keyword phrase, notice how the title is not super “spammy”)

 Don’t make the title too long or too short. It should be long enough to give a readable description of the topic. The body of your content should be at least 600-800 words, and include some keyword specific links that point back to internal pages of your website. So if I’m an interior decorator in Boise, I would create a link similar to: “Learn more about our Boise interior decorating services.” This link would point back to the services page on my website.


3. Use Yoast SEO Plug-In

Yoast SEO is a valuable plug-in which helps Google index and find your new blog post quicker. You can write a meta description, assign a focus keyword, among create a custom title. You can get away with not using these tools, however they are highly valuable in helping your post get found quicker.


4. Tags

Tags are like your safe keyword “dumping ground.” This where we recommend adding 5-10 keywords related to your post. This also helps viewers find similar blog posts, as they can click on a tag, and it will show them all relevant posts that also have the same tag.


5. Be patient, and stick to a blogging schedule

Although optimizing a blog post can happen fairly quick, the time it takes Google to index your page and then relate it to any movement when it comes to your rankings will take some time.

If you can dedicate an hour every week to adding a blog post, you’re tremendously helping your chances of driving more traffic to your site through organic SEO.
