Website Fonts: How much is too much or too little?

When it comes to web design, fonts play a very important role in a great web layout. But how do you know if you’re over or under-using the amount of fonts on a website layout?

Well truthfully, your design eye/gut should tell you, but luckily there are some general rules to keep in mind.

Using 1 font:

Nowadays, us designers have so much to choose from when it comes to fonts. Thanks to CSS and the available Web Fonts, the sky is the limit. Although you can easily get carried away by using tons of fonts on one website, many choose to use just one font.

Is this a good idea?

Using just one font family on a website can definitely go both ways. If the font being used isn’t being shown in different variations, then this could make for a boring presentation, especially when it comes to reading content on a page. Some simple ways to liven up single-font websites include adding color in certain areas separate from the color being used as your content, maybe bolding certain areas, including navigation, headers and other titles.

Using 2-3 fonts:

In modern web design, you’ll almost always find that the designer uses 2-3 different fonts opposed to sticking to just one. This really helps keep a website full of life and adds some subtle detail. Normally when using multiple fonts, designers will tend to choose ones that compliment each other, rather than fonts that look similar to one another.

Where do I find web fonts?

You can look online and find numerous websites that offer both free fonts for use, along with many that you can purchase the license to.

A few of our favorite font sites include:

typewolf.com
